This week we’re featuring three new BK spots, highlighting gallery shows & photo book festivals, sharing last-minute Mother’s Day plans, spring shopping markets & food pop-ups, and introducing you to our cool new friend: Ella Quittner.

Field Study

Specialty coffee, records, vintage cars…Field Study is a new cafe in East Williamsburg tailor-made for a very specific type of Brooklynite. While we’ve yet to set foot in the space yet, we’re eagerly awaiting a bop in to see the space this weekend, for a cortado made with beans from Paris-based roaster DATURA. Maybe we’ll see you there? Field Study is open 10a-4p Fridays-Mondays at 904 Grand St.

Zoli

Tucked away on an industrial block in East Williamsburg, Zoli is the stunning new culinary anchor of the Amant art campus, brought to you by the dream team of Houseman’s Ned Baldwin and founder Lonti Ebers. The former warehouse has been transformed into a quiet but considered space, complete with a monumental aquarium installation and a lush rooftop terrace perfect for taking in the skyline. The menu is a seafood-heavy love letter to New York’s local waterways, featuring high-impact dishes like crispy black sea bass with nam jim and a wood-fired bison strip steak that is well worth the L train trek. Book your reservation here, though walk-ins are always welcome at 312 Maujer St!

Drums & Flats

The “other” 5th avenue in Park Slope, Brooklyn has a new spot to pregame your concert or NY Liberty game at Barclays. Drums & Flats is a Wingery and Bar that offers more than just the requisite buffalo and blue cheese. Here you’ll also find burgers, dogs, fried chicken, and even a few vegetarian and healthier options! Stop by at 56 5th avenue every day starting at 4p and open all the way til 2a on Fridays and Saturdays!

Ziggy's Roman Cafe and Chop Suey Club are hosting three nights of mahjong this May, inclusive of a beginner's lesson in Cantonese mahjong, free play, an open bar sponsored by Tito's and Lalo Tequila and free flow Roman-style pizza. Guests are guided by Rouyi Jiang, author of Mahjong for Dummies, and her team through an intimate lesson for beginners that's tailored to each player's level. First timers are welcome!

Meet Ella, the downtown dinner party queen and writer whose career trajectory spans from Wall Street to “toxic” test kitchens and hippie high school documentaries. Equal parts Calvin Trillin and Ina Garten, she is a prolific culture and food reporter with bylines at New York Magazine and The New York Times. Her debut cookbook is a delightful, deeply researched collection of 100 recipes each tested with 24 head-to-head tests!
